Resident safety is important.
The Metropolitan Police Department Second District reported both the Saratoga and the Chesapeake to the DC Office of the Attorney General Nuisance Office for consistent problems of violent crime and drug-related crime in the buildings. According to MPD Second District Commander Bedlion (Bedlion has since accepted a new role with the Pentagon in 2023), MPD reported both buildings for ongoing and persistent violent crime and drug-related issues that were not being addressed by the building managers despite MPD multiple efforts to get building managers to utilize intervention measures that reduce crime and violence.
In a series of townhall meetings hosted by community interest groups as well as the SC TA, MPD explained the efforts MPD has taken to improve the safety and living conditions in the Saratoga Chesapeake buildings for all residents. At a 2022 town hall meeting, then Councilmember Mary Cheh addressed the Saratoga and Chesapeake nuisance building status. Before her position concluded, Cheh worked with DC Council to try to improve living conditions in the Saratoga Chesapeake and other buildings in the Van Ness Corridor.
Communities that are pro-active and take steps to keep tenants safe are crucial and important to the well being of all tenants, staff, visitors, and all beings within the community.
